Two different dryer motors, one General Electric and the other an FSP Kenmore (Whirlpool). I explain to the best of my knowledge how the mechanics of the motors and centrifugal switches operate. The thicker red color winding in the Whirlpool motor is its run winding. As you watch you will see a brass colored thin winding which is its start winding and runs 90 degrees opposed to the run winding. Upon startup, the start winding is usually only engaged with the run winding for a few seconds and pulls almost twice the rated run aperage of the running motor which explains why lights will dim, flicker, etc when a heavy duty motor starts up. The initial ‘start’ of a motor or compressor uses the most energy. If, the switch fails to open the contacts and terminate the operation of the start winding it can burn up in a minute or less, depending on motor and load and sometimes will catch fire. The principals are the same for blower or Totalally/Partially Enclosed motors. Blower motors have open contacts for the most part that seperate when the centrifugal switch pulls back allowing them to spring apart. With the dryer motor, the contacts are enclosed within the microswitch. Some motors can have a start capacitor to ‘assist’ in a faster startup such as the GE motor I have on my channel. The ‘click’ or snap can usuall be heard when these motors startup or shutdown and that is the centrifugal switch mechanism on the motor shaft snapping back or forward. Some motors depending on duty …

It’s not the meanest blade at the party but it makes a statement. The Cold Steel Spartan is a manly blade whose lines and chiseled looks would fit right it in at the Battle of Thermopylae or even in a Cretaceous period dinosaur hunting expedition. The Grivory handle is a favorite part for me: the blocky contours are both cool and functional and the wrap around design literally locks the handle into the users’ hand. It accommodates both forward and reverse grips and its butt end is long and effective enough for non-lethal impacts. The AUS8A steel choice will provide good edge holding and medium rust resistance. The beast blasted finish looks good and contrasts well with the black handle (and it takes engraving well too). Expect some complications during sharpening as the heavily curved blade will make it tough. However it’s that same 4.5″ inch Kukri blade shape that gives the chunky Spartan great slashing performance. Out of the box, the Spartan arrives razor edged…nice job Cold Steel. With practice, the deployment speed is fast and I find single handed opening works. Smaller hands might have trouble actuating the thumb plate in conventional fashion. However that thumbplate is ambidextrous (as are the clip placements, two included) and can work to wave the blade from the pocket (a radiused base to this thumbplate could help prevent pocket hangup btw).
